Lee County’s first PugFest held Sunday, March 20th at the Bell Tower Shops in Fort Myers raised over $2000 for two local causes. The fundraiser was a joint effort by Lee County's Library System and Lee County Animal Services to benefit the Reading Festival and Animal Care Trust Fund. The Lee County Reading Festival is an annual event to encourage reading and use of the library's resources.  The Animal Care Trust Fund provides money for a variety of needs including affordable spay/neuter surgery for disadvantaged pet owners, care of neglected or abused animals, and disaster preparedness for pets.

An estimated crowd of 500 people and150 Pugs plus other breeds of dogs participated in a variety of activities.  A book signing by Reading Festival author and illustrator, Dan Yaccarino of his children’s book, “Unlovable,” about a Pug was a featured highlight for Pug-lovers of all ages.

Cincinnati, Ohio PugFest founder, Stan Hertzman traveled over 1,000 miles to attend the Lee County PugFest with his Pug, Buddy, who served as Grand Marshall.  Hertzman adopted Buddy in Fort Myers and started the Cincinnati Pugfest as a fundraiser for Ohio Pug Rescue in 1999.

Wendy Kellenberger of Photos Now By Wendy captured many photos of Pugs and their Pug-loving owners plus some very proud non-Pug owners too!  They were a popular item at the PugFest and a great way to remember the day.

A couple of Wendy's photos also follow below (as noted on those photos) among our amateur snap shots of the event.

The crowd gathered to watch Pug models show off the latest in designer fashions.

Over thirty outfits courtesy of Dudley's Dog Bakery & Boutique were featured.

Not to be outdone by the models, many other Pugs also sported fashionable attire. It may have been a PugFest but that didn't keep the Cavaliers, Poodles, Chihuahuas and many other dog breeds from joining in the fun!

Contestants in the Costume Contest included a Pug "Knight in Shining Armor" and a couple of Tourist Pugs on vacation.

Stan Hertzman with Buddy, PugFest Grand Marshall, and his two other dogs who made the 1000 mile trip from Cincinnati just for the event! It was a beautiful day for owners and pets to browse, shop, and socialize while raising funds for two great causes!.

Thanks to our generous sponsors:
