Hendry Creek
The Hendry Creek Watershed contains approximately 14.3 square miles of land area. Hendry Creek is the main tributary of this watershed which outfalls into Estero Bay near the confluence of Mullock Creek. The basin is located in the central portion of Lee County, Florida and is bordered by Estero Bay to the south; Cow Slough and Deep Lagoon watersheds to the west; Whiskey Creek Watershed to the north; Ten Mile Canal and Six Mile Cypress Slough watersheds to the east; and Mullock Creek Watershed to the southeast. Boundary lines, as presented on the "Boundary Map," have been based upon SFWMD permit data, topographic aerial maps and verified by field reconnaissance. The watershed is approximately six miles in length and two and one-half miles in width.
The Hendry Creek Watershed prior to 1900 was one of the largest basins in the area. However, construction of the Ten Mile Canal dike and levees have truncated the majority of the past runoff. Much of the 68 square miles which now flow through Ten Mile Canal, formerly were part of Hendry Watershed.
The boundary of Hendry Creek Watershed originates at Estero Bay and proceeds along the western boundary of the basin along Winkler Road north to Cypress Lake Drive intersection; thence east to Summerlin Road; thence north along Summerlin Road to the northern boundary of Seven Lakes community; thence east to the west dike of Ten Mile Canal; thence south along the dike to an existing FP&L access road; thence southwesterly along a topographic ridge separating Mullock Creek basin and Hendry Creek Basin.
The watershed is highly urbanized in the northern reaches of the watershed with increasing development in the lower portion around Island Park Road. This type of growth is most evident along the U.S. 41 corridor. Included in the central portion of the watershed is Lakes Park, which is a Lee County public recreation facility containing a natural public swimming basin.
