October 1, 2010 is the start of the new single stream collection program in Lee County.  Following is some important information for our residents about the program.  Please remember to set out your materials by 6:30 AM the day of the collection and place your containers away from mail boxes and light poles.  Set containers at least 3 feet away from each other to allow for automated collection.   Thank you.

Residents in Unincorporated Lee County, the City of Bonita Springs and Town of Fort Myers Beach now have it easier than ever to RECYCLE.

Lee County is implementing the Single Stream Recycling program.

RecycleBinCommingledThis means that residents no longer have to sort the recyclable materials. Paper,Plastic, Metal, and Glass items can all be mixed and taken to the curb in one container. Trucking of the material is more efficient because only fully loaded vehicles come to the Recycling Facility to unload. Previously, as example, when the trucks paper compartment was filled the truck had to come to the Recycling Facility to unload even though the plastic compartment may only have been half full. Wheeled Cart

The Town Council of Fort Myers Beach, the City Council of Bonita Springs, and the Lee County Board of County Commissioners have approved the use of 64 Gallon Wheeled Recycling Carts for residents residing in Franchise Service Area 1 (Fort Myers Beach and City of Bonita Springs) and Franchise Area 2 (South Fort Myers). Use this cart to collect all recyclables and set it out for collection when full on the day when your recyclables get picked up. Residents in the remainder of Lee County are asked to continue the use of their current recycling containers (see franchise area and hauler details on this page).

 Dear Resident:

The Lee County Solid Waste Division has finished the renovation of its Material Recycling Facility allowing the County to process single stream collected recyclables. The new equipment consists of a combination of air classifiers, screens, trommels, edy currents, magnets, and optical separators.

The switch to single stream recycling in Lee County, Bonita Springs and Fort Myers Beach begins October 1, 2010.

In order for the new system to perform effectively and to optimize operations, the Lee County Solid Waste Division asks residents to ensure that no trash is included in their recycle containers.

Lee County's goal is also to recover more cardboard as a recyclable material. Residents are asked to place cardboard at the curb only on their recycling collection day.

Cardboard placed at the curb on your garbage day will not be collected and will be tagged informing you to put it at the curb on recycle collection day.

If you are unsure if a product is recyclable, then please call the Lee County Solid Waste Division at (239) 533-8000.

Thank you for keeping the recycle stream clean.
