The Lee County Solid Waste Division has opened its permanent Household Chemical Waste Collection facility on 6441 Topaz Court (off Metro Pkwy) for operation.
Residents may now dispose of household chemical waste between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm, Monday through Friday and every first Saturday of the month from 8 am to 12 Noon. The facility will be closed on holidays observed by Lee County.
Please note, we are not accepting radioactive waste, bio-medical waste, and explosive items.
Return smoke alarms and monoxide alarms to the manufacturer for disposal.
Household Chemical Waste must be handled in special ways to prevent threats to human health and the environment. Understanding the complexity of our resources and learning how we affect our environment, for better or for worse, will improve how we manage our environment.
Household Chemical Waste can not be placed in dumpsters, compactors, or curbside! |

Over 75% of the materials brought to the Solid Waste Division are recycled, and the rest is treated by our consultant who specializes in sorting and disposing of the hazardous waste properly, preserving our environment and eliminating possible health risks from the improper disposal of these chemcials to humans and animals. The The staff of the Solid Waste Division thanks the residents of Lee County for their efforts in protecting our environment and greatly appreciates their loyalty to this program.

Please take these safety precautions when handling and transporting hazardous waste:
Wear protective gloves when handling household hazardous waste. Use Cardboard boxes, or other suitable containers to prevent spills.
Packaging
- Keep products in their original containers. Do not mix products. This can save lives.
- Label materials that are not in their original containers.
- Label unknown items to the extent possible. If unaware of specific product name, provide product category, such as pesticide or cleaning product. Label the outside container with the contents and date.
- Make sure lids are tightly sealed.
- If a container is leaking, this container should be placed within a larger, plastic container with a tight-fitting lid. A non-flammable absorbent, such as clay-based cat box filler, "kitty litter," should be packed around the product to absorb any possible leaks.
- Place products upright in cardboard box and secure so that they do not tip over in transport.
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs - Disposal and clean up instructions
Transport products in the back of a pickup truck or in a car trunk. If you must transport the products in the passenger compartment, make sure there is adequate ventilation. Do not smoke while transporting hazardous materials. Keep flammables out of direct sunlight and away from sources of heat, spark, flame, or ignition.
A waste is hazardous if it exhibits any of these four characteristics:
1 |
Flammability or Ignitability:
Ignitable waste can create fires under certain conditions. Examples include liquids, such as solvents that readily catch fire, and friction-sensitive substances.
Examples:
lighter fluids |
propane cylinders |
paint thinner |
used motor oil |
turpentine |
polish |
adhesives |
oil-based paints |
certain degreasers | |
2 |
Corrosivity:
Waste is considered corrosive if it is capable of corroding metals or has a very high or low pH.
Examples:
acids and caustics |
pool chemicals |
strong chemicals |
battery acid |
bleach |
rust removers | |
3 |
Reactivity:
Waste is considered reactive if it is unstable and explodes or produces toxic fumes, gases, and vapors when mixed with water or under other conditions such as heat or pressure. Examples are certain cyanides or sulfide-bearing wastes.
Examples:
cyanides |
pool chlorine |
strong fertilizers | |
4
_ |
Toxicity:
Waste is considered toxic if it is harmful or fatal when ingested or absorbed, or it leaches toxic chemicals into the soil or ground water when disposed of on land.
Examples:
rat poison |
weed killers |
antifreeze | |
